POOLING OUR RESEARCH EFFORTS
Over 600 family historians have contributed data to this website to help eachother discover the facts about their Barger family roots. Membership in the Barger Family History Society is free and open to everyone interested in the history of the various Barger families. In the 1990 census, there were fewer than 6,000 Barger families in the United States, yet many of us have lost track of our mutual relations. By pooling our knowledge and promoting and the highest standards of surname research, we hope to provide a useful resource for all Barger-related families, even those with variant spellings, such as Bargar, Barrigar, Berger, Berrier, Shufflebarger, Wolfenbarger, Fronabarger and others.
BARGER FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY BACKGROUND
In January of 1998, this Barger Family History Society webpage was launched on the world wide web by Susan Barger Donahue, a genealogy instructor at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, to provide a point of contact for those interested in Barger family research. In May of 1999, the webpage was designated an official Surname Resource Center and registered with the Surname Web. Since that time, the Barger Family Hisory Society has affiliated with the Rootsweb organization to provide a more interactive communication system. In March of 2000, the organization relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska where Susan Barger Donahue continues to administer this website and promotes interest in genealogy by conducting a family history program for the City of Lincoln Department of Parks and Recreation. Descendants of various lines of the Barger families in the United States, Australia, New Zeland, Canada, South Africa, Germany, France and Holland have contacted the society, and membership continues to grow each month.

We support RootsWeb, and encourage everyone else to do the same, if they so choose. The Rootsweb folks believe in keeping genealogy on the World Wide Web FREE. What is RootsWeb? RootsWeb is many things, but most of all, it is a genealogical data cooperative. It provides space for transcripts of records, all indexed and easy to access. Rootsweb is also host to hundreds of mailing lists for locations and surnames, including our Barger list, as well as special interest sites. Many of the databases and services are free to users, but we highly recommend supporting their efforts by subscribing to Rootsweb. (See link below). I would like to announce that there is a Barger DNA project available to male decendants that carry the Barger surname. This test would be able to prove or disprove a link between different Barger groups. The more who enter the surname project the more matches we can make between families. If you are interested in DNA testing go to www.familytree.com to get a better idea of what it all means.
Here is a link directly to the Barker/Barger surname group. This is through family tree DNA. It is $99.00 to take a 12 marker test if you go through the surname project (this is a significantly reduced price). With a 12 marker test you would be able to prove a relationship with a person of the same last name. This test will give you a general point of origin i.e. Europe or Asia. It will not tell you if you are of Jewish, American Indian decent etc. There is the option to upgrade to more markers now or in the future to open up more possibilities.
Currently there are two Bargers in the project both from the line of Thomas Barger from Ireland. If anyone has results from another test provider they can enter them into this project. This could be a wonderful tool.
