C. L. "Buck" BARGER

19 Jun 1998: "C.L. 'Buck' Barger, 72 of Oak Ridge, died
Thursday, June 18, 1998, at his home. Mr. Barger was the
former owner of Barger Appliance Repair, a business
that
he operated in Oak Ridge for 32 years. He was born in
Rhea County on June 14, 1926, the son of C.T. and
Ethel
Dobbs Barger, who are now deceased. He was a U.S. Navy
veteran and served as coxswain in the South Pacific
during
World War II. Among his metals he received was the Purple
Heart. While in the Navy, Mr. Barger
was a member of the
band that played aboard the USS Acherner.
The Center for the Study of War and Society in the Hoskins
Library at the University of Tennessee has a picture of the
ship. Mr. Barger had been a resident of Oak Ridge
since
1943, moving here from Dayton, Tenn. He was a member of
Royce Baptist Church. He was a longtime
member of the
Oak Ridge Country Club until becoming ill. He enjoyed
music, playing golf and bowling, and he was
a big fan of the
Atlanta Braves baseball team, his family said. Mr. Barger is
survived by his wife of 50 years,
Louise Parson Barger; a
daughter, Peggy Brummet and her husband, David of Oak
Ridge; and three sisters; Kate Massengale
and her
husband, J.B., of Dayton and Rose Seals and her husband,
Jim, and Phoebe Mullins and her husband, Howard,
all of
Oak Ridge. He is also survived by three grandchildren,
Michael Schaefer, Karen
Brummett and rachel Brummett, all
of Oak Ridge; a great-granddaughter, Brittany Quilliams of
Oak Ridge; two sisters-in-law,
Betty Barger of Knoxville and
Kay Barger of Oak Ridge; and several nieces and nephews.
A son, Larry Barger, died in
1976. The funeral will be held
8 p.m. Saturday, June 20, in the chapel of Weatherford
Mortuary with the Rev.
Mack Smith officiating. A graveside
service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at Anderson
Memorial Gardens,
Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton. The
family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the
mortuary."
