CHRISTIAN DALE BARGER
From the Barger Journal of 1939:
Christian Dale Barger, son of Alexander Barger and Mary E.
nee Wooden, was born
at Clifty, Indiana, in 1851, a
grandson of Christian and Elizabeth Barger of Clifty, late of
Monroe
County, West Virginia. He was beginning his
education in the schools of his county when the Civil War
broke
out. He was about six years old when his parents
moved from Clifty to Vinton, Benton County, Iowa, where they
located
on a farm. He was about eleven years old when the
war began, and notwithstanding his extreme youth,
succeded
in taking part as a musician in that conflict, being
a fifer. He served through the period of the war and
was
honorably discharged in 1865. He was, probably, the
youngest man in the Union Army. After the war,
having
completed his education, he turned to the business of
farming, near Vinton, Iowa, where he lived an honorable,
upright and busy life. In 1872 he married Anne Belle
Shockley, at Vinton. They moved to Cedar
Rapids, Linn
County, Iowa, and it was there Christian died in 1915; but
burial was at Vinton. On the occasion
of his death, a Cedar
Rapids newspaper said: "Christian Dale Barger was the
youngest man in the Union Army, during
the Civil War, who
has made his home in Iowa. He enlisted when eleven
years of age, and there are no records
showing that there
is another Civil War veteran in the State who entered the
army at that age. Mr. Barger enlisted
in Company H, 1st
Battalion, 13th Iowa Infantry, in Decatur Couny, Indiana, in
April 1862, as a fifer,
and was given an honorable discharge
in 1865. He was in nine battles, including Rolling Fork and
Vicksburg,and
was confined six months in Andersonville
Prison. There, owing to his youth and size, he was extended
many privileges,
He said he enjoyed his experiance there
as much as one could under the conditions that existed
within."
A sympathetic relative said: "I feel like apologizing,
even at this late date, for relatives who would permit a
child
of eleven years to go into the Army. However, I realize that
the conditions attending the Civil
War must have created an
abnormally restless atmosphere in the homes, such as we
of today can scarcly comprehend;
and we, perhaps, could
not criticise the act of those who were subject to such trying
condtions. I relate the
story of his going to the war as it has
been passed on to me. "As little Dale Barger was
passionately
fond of music, and was a good fifer, even at
eleven years of age, the stirring military music he hard day
after day,
as a company was being formed in his home
town, filled him with patiotic zeal to the extent that was
irresisible;
and so, when the company left the place he
followed it. He was brought back home, but ran away to the
camp again
and again, only to be returned to his home.
Finally the captain of the company came to the parents and
begged
that Dale might go with them, promising he would
be cared for and guarded in every posible way. They, at last,
consented,
feeling sure, however, that Dale would soon
grow weary of camp life and would want to come home. But,
on
the contrary, he held out steadfastly till to the close of the
war. Although startng out with an Iowa company, he,
later,
was transferred to an Indiana company, in which was a
relative." -- The children of Christian Dale Barger
and his
wife were: Vida; Ethel; Clyde; Frank."
