"This indenture made this 18th day of November, A.D. 1865,
between James Watkins, Sheriff of the County of Jackson in
the State of Iowa of the first part and James D. Bo_____
of
Clinton County, State of Iowa of the second part, whereas
at the September term of the District Court in and for
the
County of Jackson in the said Sate of Iowa, held at the
courthouse on the 6th day of October 1865, before the
Honorable J. Scott R___man, sole presiding Judge of said
court. It was among other things ordered and adjudged and
decreed by the said court in a cause therein pending
between William E. Leffingwell, Plaintiff, and Joseph Kelso,
Special Guardian of the minor heirs of Wm. P. and Delila
Barger, deceased, defendants, that a special execution
should issue whereon the sheriff should sell the real estate
mentioned in the petition in said action or so
much therof as
should be necessary to be sold to satisfy the amount due
with interest and costs in the
same manner as real esate is
sold...."
Note: This Sheriff's deed conveyed the land of Wm. P.
Barger
who was hanged following a trial for the murder of
his wife, Delila Barger. They had been married in Jo
Daviess
County, Illinois, across the Mississippi River from
Jackson Co., Iowa, on 8 Jul 1838 [Bk/pg 001/0093]. The
names of the minor children were not shown in said deed.
